VICTORIA FALLS SITUATION ANALYSIS

04-01-2019

Today people woke up to the news of bread prices going up and unfortunately even with prices going up it continues to be elusive on the shelves.Weekend saw fuel queueing emerging once again and some garages actually ran out of the precious commodities and garages which had fuel today took the opportunity to unofficially hike their prices

Basic commodities are appearing on shelves with a 10 kg of parlenta going for $8,65 whilst a 10kg roller meal costs $6,70 and a case of 2 kg sugar costs $40,00,potatoes a 10 kg pocket costs $17,50.

On the parallel markets US$100 is being exchanged at between $370 and $380 bond transfers/ecocash whilst 100 rands gives you US$7.

A visit to the upcoming Vic Falls shopping mall showed that the complex is now more than 90% complete and expected to open their doors end of March or early April.

Rains in the resort town have been gone for a while now and the temperatures keep soaring but that hasn’t deterred tourists who faithfully continue to visit the resort town.

VICTORIA FALLS TOWN SITUATION ANALYSIS.

01-02-2019

The first day of the month of February, a day which also coincided with the Presidential declared clean up campaign day and Victoria Falls town was no exception as a lot of government departments, Hotel employees etc joined in the call up for a better safer and cleaner environment as they went all out in response to the campaign. Though it was worrisome to note that the general populace still needs to be educated and conscientised on the importance of engagement in such noble acts as they largely ignored or did not partake in the initiative.

On the other hand basic commodities are available although bread is still posing a problem as it is in short supply the same with cooking oil which has disappeared from the shelves for quite a long time.Fuel queuing is now a thing of the past as most garages have the precious commodities and selling in both Forex and local currency.

There weren’t any reports of school children being turned away as most teachers were present at their respective posts and ZRP details are still very much visible at all major shopping centers and train station safeguarding all tourists and locals, maintaining law and order.

The US$ is trading for US$100 for $380 bond if it’s transfers or ecocash and between $300 & $330 for bond cash, whilst 100 rands is exchanged for $20 bond or US$7 for 100 rands.

The temperatures are still soaring with no rains in sight which is putting a strain on the crops in the surrounding areas.

On a sad note one of our Youth league National member representing Mat North Cde Wellington Tagarira has lost his brother who was resident in Victoria Falls, the deceased passed away in Botswana and is a former Manager at Power Sales store situated in Vic Falls town center. Arrangements in regards to the funeral proceedings are yet to be established but people are congregated at his house in Chinotimba township,Vic Falls.

 VICTORIA FALLS TOWN SITUATION ANALYSIS

It was an uneventful day with all correct and proper and people going about with their daily activities and also notable was that teachers in almost all schools reported for their respective duties in total disregard of the call by ZIMTA to shun their workplaces.

A matter of concern is the withdrawal of a site that had been allocated to ZANU PF for building district party offices by the MDC led council of Victoria Falls and this might be because we no longer have a voice in the council chambers and might have been done to spite us,The reason of the withdrawal is said to be debts which were never serviced for a long time and we still await guidance of the party leaders over course of action to be taken, nothing had been erected on the site though.

Thank you.

 VICTORIA FALLS TOWN SITUATION ANALYSIS

30-01-2019

It was a hot day in the resort town and temperatures were very high and although it was calm according to the political atmosphere and everyone was going about their business freely.

Month end time has seen the emergency of the dreaded and unpopular long bank queus which are quite an embarrassment to our government though intriguing to hoards of tourists who throng the resort town as they seem perplexed by such scenarios and these lines become so much a platform for preaching the anti #ED gospel and another point to note is that these bank queueing are only done by those who don’t have nostro accounts of which a large number consists of civil servants.

The school children are attending to their lessons and normalcy is reported in almost all schools,Victoria Falls hospital which serves also as a referral center has been accepting patients from all over Hwange rural and adjacent areas to Vic Falls and there has been no reports of people being turned away, there’s always one doctor at call at any given time.

Basic supplies continue to be available with the exception of cooking oil which continues to be elusive, fuel is also available at all service stations and cars drive in and out at will.

Rains have been gone for a while now though the outlook is promising and the general crop state is still fairly good.

Thank you.

Reports below based on the 28th of January 2019:

Situational analysis

Highlight of the day in Harare CBD was the demo by the lawyers under the Zimbabwe Lawyer for Human Rights banner.

The demo was peaceful and the security services watched from afar n allowed the lawyers space. The cool reaction by authorities must be commended because the lawyers wr waving some placards with derogatory remarks(see image attached) and some wld chant provocative words.

A quick investigation revealed  that the initial plan was to march under the banner of the Law Society of Zimbabwe but there was no consensus reached on the demo on Monday 28 during the society’s General council meeting and hd scheduled a management meeting for today to decide if they sld continue with the demo or not.  Two camps emerged within the society one was advocating for the demo and the other against.

Most lawyers dd not attend the demo today as they dd not get a communication that it was a go. The last communication they got  was that the society was still  to decide (see letter attached). To this end this shows that the society on this matter  was divided.

One Harare lawyer aligned to the opposition  confided to this commander that he ddnt hv tym to waste attending such demo as it was jus a waste of time.

Another lawyer revealed that some elements wanted to hijack the demo hence  the reason y some dd not attend as they wr afraid that it wld turn violent. The involvement of pple like  mwonzora and  the coltart siblings did cast an opposition shadow on the demo.

The lawyers led by Beatrice Mtetwa presented a petition demanding the “the return of the rule of law” to CJ Malaba. The petition was received by JSC officials at the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe.

Regardless of the demo by the lawyers the situation was normal .

It must however be noted that the demo is bad optics as it gives credence to claims of rape and assault by security forces, claims which put a damper on the Zimbabwe is open for Business mantra.

Political Situation

It’s calm in Mutare.Civil servants are going to work.In the CBD Police are monitoring the situation. No violence was recorded.

Transport Situation

Most Citizens in Mutare applauded the initiative by the ZUPCO of supplying some buses to ferry people. However the kombis crews are not happy about it because they are saying ZUPCO yazvidira jecha hatichaiti mari.Citizens are now concerned or worried if these buses will stay long in providing the services.

That’s the million dollar question from the Citizens in Mutare.Yesterday some Hwindis allocated themselves some Ranks (Bus Terminus)eg Dangamvura , Hobhouse,Chikanga just to mention a few. Each bus or Kombi was supposed to pay wat they call a rank fee , unfortunately police chased away these Hwindiz.

Price Situation

It’s the norm of the day that some basic commodities in locations are expensive compared to the prices charged in town (OK,TM,SPAR ). Especially these so called tuckshops their prices are high.

Fuel Situation

Fuel is available in most fuel stations and people are saying it’s expensive to fill the tank.

VICTORIA FALLS TOWN SITUATION ANALYSIS.

29-01-2019

The day progressed well with all progressive Zimbabweans from all walks of life reporting for their respective duties, both formal and informal workers were diligent in execution of their duties and even school children attended their lessons with teachers in attendance.

The police is still maintaining a high visibility at all major shopping centers and service stations though the political atmosphere is now totally calm and everyone contacts their business without any hustles

The NRZ is trying to alleviate the transport costs by offering cheap alternatives though time factor is still a problem as a journey from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls averages at least 15 hrs a journey which can be covered in 5hours by road and costs only $8 for their economy class,$10 second class and $12 first class which is quite appropriate compared to long distance buses.

Service delivery in the area though practical it gets challenges like in the provisions of constant water supplies as the pumps are always broken down and the residents have been calling for the council to take over water provisions and maintenance of pumps from ZINWA as they feel the entity is failing them.

Basic goods are available although bread hasn’t been adequate in supplies which is also exacerbated by the fact that there isn’t any single bakery in the Victoria Falls town and supplies come from as far as Bulawayo,TM and OK supermarkets  try to alleviate the problem by their in-house bakings which doesn’t really go a long way as it is a drop in the ocean and it has seen bread priced at $2 at the tuckshops,Meat(beef) averages $15/kg with the major retailers whilst individuals butchers vary and average between $10/kg and $13/kg,cooking oil remains elusive and the alternatives that are there are beyond the reach of many as a 750ml of olive oil costs at least $18.

Rains have been gone for a while now although the crops still look good in the neighbouring Masuwe areas the situation might very well deteriorate if the rains take longer to come.Human animal conflict is also at a low as there hasn’t been new cases for a while now though occasional sightings of wild stray elephants are reported now and then in the area.

Political Situation

The calmness continues in the Province. All forces against progress have been beaten back to Harare and Bulawayo.

However, the situation is still being monitored closely.

Shops, Basic Commodities and Pricing

Mat North is open for Business and it is business as usual in the Province. The prices are as they were as per last report from this office. There has been have minimal reaction to the increase in fuel prices. However, it needs to be noted that transport prices have been adjusted in line with government directives. For long distance buses, it is now – +$30 from Bulawayo to Hwange.

Schools and Teachers Stay Away

Today most teachers went to their workplaces and teaching was reported to be taking place in most schools. Instead of Teachers not attending their posts, most students did not go to school today as most parents thought that teachers would fail to return to work. It is anticipated that come tomorrow, all schools will be operating and all students reporting to classes.

The Fuel Situation

(Please see the document below on where you are most likely to find fuel in the Province)

Good evening here is a detailed report of Victoria Falls town

Generally the political atmosphere is now totally divorced from the tensions that had gripped the country the past weeks as people could be observed going to their respective employment places or going about their respective chores and also the school children went about their activities without an incidence with all schools progressing with their lessons with teachers in attendance

The tourists continue to throng the resort town and their numbers are still relatively impressive

General supply of groceries has greatly improved with sugar stocks significantly improved though mealie meal is still scarce,Delta beverages has been able to fully stock their products and they are readily available,Mazoe products are still hard to come by although Tacoola and Quench products are filling the void,Almost all garages had fuel today both petrol and diesel selling at the gazetted fares and accepting all currencies be it bond,US$ or rands

The down side is the continued perennial water problems in the surbubs of Vic Falls and today all areas along Lawley road had dry taps and some areas of Chinotimba and Mkhosana.

Commuters are bearing the brunt of the taxi operators who now charge as much as $2 for a single fare and it doesn’t get any better for hires which now charge anything from as much as $10 per trip, airport to town taxis now charge US$20,long distance buses now charge at least $55 to Bulawayo.

Political Situation

Gweru town today is very calm everyone going about their day to day operations well. Police patrols are quite visible with some officers on standby at Chicken Inn along Robert Mugabe way were forex traders oftenly frequent. No Political gatherings were visible even at our Party office it was quite with no public meetings. Political regalia was not visible today in the city.

Fuel Situation

Petrol and Diesel in fuel station was available at two fuel stations at Sakunda and Total On the run along Buluwayo -Harare road. The rest fuel stations were yet to receive the precious liquid. Kombis were carrying pple to and from town smoothly at $1 per head. No buses were seen carrying people.

Civil servants( Teachers)

Teachers reported to work.Observed was Chaplin High , Cjr primary and Stanley primary. Teaching was quite normal. most students were taking their lessons swiftly.

Traffic lights were generally not working save for one intersection in the City.  Gweru General Hospital everyone seemed saved well and nurses were on duty.

Price situation

Some of the price of the commodities are in pics below .Pics of the scenes in Gweru are below. While most commodities were priced in USD Price and Bond note price with exceptional retailers eg Hardwares who have their stock priced in USD only.

Political  situation

Situation in Harare  CBD  fully  back  to normal. Business was usual despite  calls on social media to stage another shut down/stay away.

A visit to one of the frequently  visited Salon/barber indicated that most hair dresser n barbers  were  happy to be back at work full throttle without fear as the zctu led shut down affected them the most.

However, in terms of accountability  its still to be seen if most  informal traders as well as residents of zone 4 will hold the opposition accountable for the violence.  Most patrons in town still believe  that the gvt needs to be forced into  action.

In light  of some conversations this  commander held with patrons  in CBD  it looks like the gvt  is seating on a time bomb  unless they act on some issues specifically on commodity price.

FUEL

No queues  to report of whatsoever thou  its still to be seen if this is a good thing. Most fuel  attendees will be seen chatting on their  phones because they were no cars  to fill  up.

Examples Zuva 4th, Treck Samora (pandadira ini)

Combis still charging the same as Zupco which is good for residents. tho most people are a bit skeptical about the sustainability of  “ZUPCO" buses .

Schools and Civil servants

Teachers and other civil servants reported for duty  amid a third force that was advocating for them to stay away.

Gvt  workers  responded well to the call by apex council to report for duty and give  dialogue a chance.

The cracked down on perpetrators  seem to have worked by instilling fear  on residents of zone 4 & looks like they will not participate in these  kinds of acts in the near future.

However the government  still needs  to do something about the challenges the nation is facing. Residents of zone 4 might not come out guns blazing but the feeling the people v is not good for the government.
