WEEKLY ROUNDUP
By Simba Timba – 09.03.2019
The week comes to an end as we bury our National Hero Brigadier General Emilio Munemo. We are grateful for his service to the motherland, and we believe that his role will inspire citizens to serve their country with their best efforts. May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace.
Weekly Roundup brings you the updates of the developments in the week.
1. The Presidential Advisory Council had its inaugural meeting this week. This is the first ever PAC to be formed in Zimbabwe. The meeting saw the advisors making commitments to serve the nation, and also to set up their way forward towards working with President ED Mnangagwa to restore Zimbabwe to its jewel of the continent’s status.
2. Zimbabwe won two prestigious awards from the Pacific Travel Writers’ Association (PATWA) at the International Tourism Bourse in Berlin, Germany. This comes as a reward to Zimbabwe’s massive efforts to promote the nation as tourist destination. Zimbabwe is gifted with many beautiful sites and the world has to see what we are endowed with.
3. The government announced the liberalisation of fuel imports for miners and farmers using their free funds. This means miners and farmers who have money and want to import fuel can now do so, freeing the demand on service stations (as they consume 30%) of the fuel supply. This is expected to ease the pressure on the fuel supply situation.
4. The Zimbabwe – South Africa Bi-National Commission commenced in Harare. The BNC is a sign of further growing relations between South Africa and Zimbabwe. Such relations are key as they will lead to mutual success for the two countries. The BNC also affirms the success of the diplomatic efforts by the government, ensuring that it has good relations within and outside Africa.
5. IMF applauded Zimbabwe’s currency reforms. The IMF spokesperson commented after receiving feedback from Minister Of Finance and Economic Development, Prof Mthuli Ncube on Zimbabwe’s economic reforms progress.
6. Premier African Minerals restarted drilling at Fort Rixon lithium project. Prospect Resources also communicated that it has completed its plant optimisation at the Arcadia project. Zimbabwe has vast lithium deposits and foresees a future where value addition is done. This will create more jobs and a better quality of life for the Zimbabwean citizens.
7. Prospect Resources, which runs Arcadia Lithium has been granted Special Economic Zone Status. This is a sign of how the government is promoting investment and development in Zimbabwe. Foreign Direct Investment is critical to growing the economy and creation of employment.
8. Zimbabwe celebrated the International Women’s Day, a day which is set aside globally to commemorate the role of women in transforming nations. Women are urged to rise, and not be limited by any ceilings.
9. President ED Mnangagwa appointed Senator Oliver Chidawu as Minister of State for Harare province. This is a development that has been hailed by many stakeholders as progressive and development oriented. We wish the minister of State success in his time of service.
That’s all for our roundup. Stay connected for next week’s updates.
